Zurich Spring Festival
Today's Sechseläuten can be traced back to three different roots: Firstly, to the Zurich guilds, which, as political, military, social and commercial institutions, have guided and determined the fortunes of the city for over 450 years. They are the organisers of the Zurich Spring Festival. The former trade regulations of the guilds determined the working hours of the craftsmen. This is the second root of Sechseläuten: In summer, the ‘six o'clock ringing’ signalled the end of working hours, while in winter work could only continue until five o'clock due to the light conditions. Finally, a pagan custom - the burning of the winter as a symbol of the beginning of the warmer seasons - represents the third root.
Today, Sechseläuten is Zurich's big spring festival for the whole population. For the Zurich guilds and the ZZZ, which organises it every year, it is important that Sechseläuten is a joyful celebration and a positive experience, as it has always been. They attach great importance to considerate and courteous behaviour and consider it a matter of course that the laws and rules of decency are respected by all participants.
